The night of the eighth of February brought a feeling of anticipation in the air. Maybe due to the fact that it was a Thursday, or maybe… just maybe there was something special about to take place in a dungeon-ish looking venue. Trust, once you walk in you quickly come to the realisation that what you see is the total opposite.

As you walk down the lengthy stairs, you are greeted by beautiful women handing out welcome drinks. I knew then that I have arrived at the right place. The #VOTY (verse of the year) awards hosted by Slikour On Life and Hennesy.

Most of hip hop royalty had shown up to see who was going to take the coveted title. Stogie T started the show by announcing how he and he alone chose the winners. So for each month there was a verse that is recognised as the strongest month for that period. So the winners ranged from Youngsta CPT, A-Reece, Zakwe, Maraza, Kid X, Kwesta in no particular order.

There was one thing that stood out however, when Stogie took a subliminal shot at Cassper Nyovest by adding Black Thought on the list from a verse he did on Ng’yekeleni (which happens to be a song by Cassper). NOTE: Black Thought is an american rap artist

The big winner Ginger Trill,  walked away with a cash prize of R5000. Overall it was a pleasant night apart from the fact that there were no female winners which should be addressed on a deeper level.
